We meet Ceri, the playful, rhyming Loon who has constructed a warm pastoral history from the fragments of memory that are all that remain to her; Black Cenred, a man hung for a crime he was manipulated into, but somehow saved by Woden the Allfather in the shape of an owl; Gwylog the Celtic Mystic convinced that the Old Gods of Britain want him to join the other Heroes rather than follow his mentor; and Branwen, the Spirit of a monk denied their afterlife, whose mortal seeming echoes the robes they wore in life, several generations ago. They arrive at Gundholm just as an exhausted rider brings a message that is not welcomed by the Lady Barnotha's 'heir' Moddred. The atmosphere in the village is strangely cold and oppressive and only the Hawthorn blooms this Summer ...
